Off Campus research opportunities for University of Maryland, College Park Students

Course offered through the Department Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics

                                                                                                              

 

Prerequisites:                                      Two courses in Microbiology or Permission of Instructor

Credits:                                                 1-4 credits granted, 3 Credits applicable to Biology degree.

Time Commitment:                             Fall and Spring semesters - 3 hours/credit/week

Summers Sessions I and II - 10 hrs/credit/week

 

Course requirements:

 

Student must meet with Course instructor prior to enrolling.

Student must agree with instructor on:

·         Off Campus Mentor

·         Project

·         Credits

Student must submit a

·         Project outline

·         Project end of the semester report/poster

Student will discuss details of above and due dates with Course Instructor

 

Report should include a discussion of research performed, background information pertinent to project, rationale for experimental approach, results, discussion, and conclusion.

 

The report should be fully referenced and written according to the format of the American Society of Microbiology journals.

 

Report Format:

 

A.            Abstract (1 paragraph, summary of results and conclusions)

B.            Introduction (contains background information and project rationale).

C.            Materials and Methods (short description).

D.            Results (Please use tables and figures as needed). 

E.             Discussion (Include discussion of your results.  Please do not restate your results.  Interpret results and make conclusions).

F.             Literature cited.

 

A poster would include the same material but in a more visual presentation.

 

 

 

Grading:                A grade will be determined from the recommendation of the Project Mentor.  To be considered are: Student effort, comprehension, and industriousness.  The Course Instructor will read and evaluate the written report, consider the Mentor's recommendations, and is responsible for granting a specific grade.
