Rachel (left) is graduating Magna Cum Laude in BSCI- Microbiology. She earned High Honors for her research in the lab of Dr. Najib ElSayed (right). Rachel’s project focused upon identifying differential expressed genes in different strains of the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi using RNAsequ.

Elfalem is graduating with a double major in BSCI- Microbiology and Computer Science. His research was in the lab of Dr. Sridhar Hannenhalli dealing with analyzing variability in gene expression across different individuals and tissues, along with two other projects.

Kalyani is graduating Magna Cum Laude in BSCI- Cell Biology & Genetics. Her research was in the lab of Dr. Anne Simon on long distance RNA-RNA interactions in Saguaro cactus virus and ribosome binding sites in Turnip Crinkle virus.

He completed CBMG Honors research studying ribosome frameshifting in the lab of Dr. Jonathan Dinman (left). Krzysztof was an HHHI fellow and was awarded a 2012 Goldwater Scholarship honorable mention and a 2013 Gates-Cambridge Scholarship fellowship.

As a CEBG honors research project, he studied regulation of the Mga transcription regulator that regulates pathogenicity genes in the bacterial pathogen Streptococcus pyogenes. Adam is an HHMI fellow. He is shown with his research mentor Dr. Kevin McIver.

Hai Le (right) is a 2013 graduate in BSCI with a specialization in Physiology & Neurobiology. His research project was in the lab of Dr. Antony Jose studying RNAi mechanisms in the nematode C. elegans. Hai’s research presentation in the 2012 Undergraduate Research Day was chosen for the best poster presentation award.

The University of Maryland’s first winner of the prestigious Gates Cambridge Scholarship is Krzysztof Franaszek, a senior who juggles lab research that could lead to new virus-fighting strategies with volunteer work as an emergency medical technician for a local fire department.

This competitive international scholarship, which covers all costs for a year of post-graduate study at the University of Cambridge outside London, was established in 2001 by a $210 million donation from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This year scholarships were awarded to 39 U.S. seniors and recent graduates who combine academic excellence with a commitment to improving the lives of others. For more information click HERE.

Maria Santa (right) is a May 2012 graduate in the Cell Biology & Genetics specialization, with a minor in Italian Language and Culture. Her CBMG Honors research was done with Dr. Najib ElSayed (left) in whose lab she investigated the transcriptome profiles of the Leishmania pathogen as well as its human host cell (the macrophage) using RNAseq.

Jay is a December 2011 graduate in the General Biology specialization. He studied transcriptomes of seven charyophyte algae with high-throughput sequencing in Dr. Charles Delwiche’s lab. His results lead to his collaborative research project between the labs of Dr. Delwiche and Dr. Caren Chang, studying algal ethylene receptor genes. Jay was an HHMI and ASPB fellow.

Catherine (left) is a May 2012 graduate in the Cell Biology & Genetics specialization. She earned High Honors with her research in Dr. Louisa Wu’s lab on the DSCAM gene in Drosophila hemocytes and immunity.

Maria (right) is a May 2012 graduate in the Cell Biology & Genetics specialization with a double degree in Biochemistry. She earned High Honors with her research in Dr Silvia Muro's lab in Bioengineering focusing upon nanocarriers and endocytic receptors for drug delivery. Maria was an HHMI fellow.
